Introduction

The De Beers Group Designers Initiative (DBGDI), which incorporates the Shining Light Awards (SLA) – has existed for 23 years in South Africa, 11 years respectively in Botswana and Namibia and 2 years in Canada.
The Shining Light Awards (SLA) competition is held every two years through a collaboration between De Beers Group and Forevermark. The success of the SLA is reliant on a successful working relationship with training institutions, government stakeholders, media and youth across all our producer countries.

The Shining Light Awards (SLA) have evolved over the past few years and have moved away from a jewellery design competition focused on designing and producing beautiful, elaborate pieces to a youth skills enablement initiative focused on celebrating and capacitating jewellery design talent found in De Beers’ diamond producer countries in a sustainable way.
The SLA is a tangible representation of De Beers’ youth Beneficiation strategy and focuses on creating an enabling environment for growth, skills transfer, entrepreneurship, global experiences and mentorship in the jewellery design sector for young aspiring jewellery designers.

Over the years more than 30 young designers have won various awards and opportunities to participate in the diamond value chain in our producer countries. Leveraging the SLA as a launch pad for former awardees/winners have gone on to establish jewelry brands, open jewellery stores, design & manufacture one-of-a-kind pieces, gain employment at world class jewellery stores and become diamantaires entrepreneurs.
The 2020/2021 SLA competition was launched on the 1st December 2020 and will open for entries online from the 31 January 2021 till the 31 March 2021. All applications will be submitted through the Shining Light Awards Website. Winners will be announced in November 2021.
Three (3) awardees/winners will be selected from each country.

Entry Forms

Anyone submitting a design for the competition must complete, in full, the online entry form.

To facilitate judging, and to avoid misrepresentation, all entry forms must be completed in English. The form must include the name of the designer creating the design submitted and a brief description of the piece.

If the design is larger or smaller than the piece it represents, the scale must be given as part of the description.

NB: In the past, designs have been submitted in scales as large as 5:1. This has made rings and bracelets look like necklaces. The scale should be no larger than necessary to show design details.

The winners selected must be the individual named on the entry forms originally submitted in respect of the winning designs. No change can be made to entry forms after the designs have been selected.

Judging Of Designs

Final judging will take place in May 2021. The decision of the Board of Judges panel will be final, and no discussions can or will be entered into.

The names of all entrants will be kept in strictest confidence.

Notification Of Winners

The results of the Board of Judges decisions will be sent via email to the winners and published on local newspapers.

Winning Pieces

Winning designs may be manufactured by a sponsor, designer or a manufacturer agreed by both the sponsor and designer.

If a design is selected to be manufactured, the manufactured jewellery will be owned by the sponsor, but the designer will retain the intellectual property rights in the designs. However, neither the manufacturer, designer nor sponsor can manufacture a duplicate of the jewellery whilst the original still forms part of the official Shining Light collection.

The manufactured pieces will be held by De Beers Group to cover local market ad-hoc PR opportunities. Their pieces will remain part of the official Shining Light Collection until further notice.

Winners should ensure that any sponsor(s) (financial or other) of their creation agree the pieces need not be returned before then.

Submission Of Designs

All pieces must be part of the same theme.
