Nompumelelo Zikalala, Vice President of De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa, said: “Our ultimate objective is to ensure that we establish South Africa as a force to be reckoned with internationally, when it comes to jewellery design and manufacturing”.
The success of the Awards has been their ability to bring together industry stakeholders, including government, De Beers’ clients and Institutions of Higher Learning. Furthermore, the Awards have been able to attract entrants across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, but most importantly, from rural and disadvantaged communities within these countries.
There is no doubt that the fashion world has seen a phenomenal rise in the number of black and women designers. Recent showings in the fashion centres of the world give recognition to this talent and it is in this regard that De Beers has partnered with Abigail Betz, a South African fashion designer, for the 2014 Mercedes Benz SA Fashion Week.
The relationship with the Abigail Betz Brand was sparked by its strong vintage feel which has attracted an international fan and client base. It is only through such partnerships that the De Beers Shining Light Diamond Design Awards will continue to grow and re-invent themselves in Southern Africa and abroad.
“As De Beers, we are very encouraged that the awards have not only managed to stand the test of time, but are now internationally acclaimed. Such acclaim is testimony of the limitless creative talent within Southern Africa”, said Nompumelelo Zikalala.
